I thought I had problems with hair.
Waxing, epilation, electrolysis, shaving, threading… all seem to be part of my everyday vocabulary. Actually, it is more a problem of keeping the hair where it should be and removing it in all other places (since Indians find a headful of thick black hair sexy and which, also possibly, has some correlation between marriage prospects and future fertility). Call it the bane of being an Indian with a genetic proclivity for fuzz. In my family, we (the 4 females in our house) sort of refer to it as the werewolf syndrome, (just as we refer to the monthly ‘thing’ as the… thing) where we feel pretty the first half of the month before the hair starts creeping out on us again.
But we have learnt to deal with it… you know… by wearing skirts for the better half of the month and gradually, increasing the length of our bottoms as the time goes by. We also have our own theories and discussion groups on what is the best method for hair removal and what we have read/discovered/conjured up in our head the best ways to have long glorious tresses. (My dad, who’s hairy genes we have also inherited, quickly exits at this juncture) My mother has stuck every strange concoction of ‘natural’ substance on our heads. This includes tea grounds, henna, honey, egg white, curds, etc. all in the good intentions of making us have great-looking hair. (No, she was not cooking our next meal on our heads). Have they worked? Some have and others well, let’s say, faith and hope are great things to have when we have no answers. Plus, I hate pissing my mum off.
So where is this going? Imagine my reaction when I find out that there are horrifying events like the World Beard & Moustache Championships. UGH! Well, it is for the men anyway but still, UGH! These people grow their facial hair for competitions! My first thought was ‘How to go out like that? Wah… the waxing lady would have SUCH a problem!!’ Anyway, check it out if you want to… disturbingly hilarious.
Indian beaten to first place by a hairier Brit at WB&M’07
Ok a bit more hair, but on men. Yes, the rugged look is nice, with itty bittles of stubble in the right places. I also prefer my men hairier cos, I don’t want to be the Beast AND the beauty in the couple. But I guess my love for hair on a man also comes on a likeability spectrum. If you’re hairy and can’t do much about it cos your mum and dad were direct descendants of gorillas and the wooly mammoths, then please keep your mane problems tamed.
(This post has come to an abrupt end because I had to go call my waxing lady pronto)

AY 2007/08 Fall Semester has started off nice and quiet. I am uber excited for classes this semester. I am back with this total zest for learning and absorbing everything thrown at me. Kind of like how I was when I first started out in Year 1 before getting totally distracted, jaded and demoralised. 3 years on, with battle bruises and emotional scars, I am back, more mature and with more purpose. I am motivated to get the best out of the next few months. Plenty of career and industry talks for the graduating student and to appease the curious cat in me.
The courses I am doing this semester are exciting:
ACCT201 Corporate Reporting and Financial Analysis
ECON107 Applied Econometrics
COMM360 Investor Relations
ECON118 Economic Development in Asia
MGMT301 Business Study Mission: Israel
COMM205 Public Relations Writing (TA)
The BSM to Israel will culiminate in a visit to Haifa and Tel-Aviv in December which is SOOO exciting. I hope all goes well; I’m putting down my deposit for it tomorrow. As much as I don’t want to dream too much about it and just concentrate on the course (which in itself absolutely interesting to a closet geek like me since it is about business synergies and possibilities in the high tech and defence industries.. plus the middle east has so much of history..), I can’t help but start thinking about visiting places like Jordan (Petra!!) and Jerusalem.
Can you feel my excitement? Heh. In other stuff, I have decided to become a bit more ourgoing and cheerful this semester. Instead of scowling and looking down as I walk, to smile more and look happier. Make more solid friendships and nuture existing ones. I kinda suck at the maintaining friendships part… so if I have asked you for your address and not sent you anything… fret not.. it’s coming SOON.
I have also taken to be a more responsible person. Exercising every day, cutting down on nasty food, not pissing off my parents while doing everything I can to test my limits (heh)…. the list goes on and I can’t say it any other way.. I am happy!
Hope you are all having a good time as I am. Now I need some sleep before a long day ahead!
Movie Review: The Fountain
August 1, 2007
If you have watched the Matrix trilogy, the Cube or any of those mind-boggling sci-fi-philosophy genre type of movies AND loved it, watch this. This is a thought-provoking movie dealing with the ideas of death, reincarnation and love (at the very least). Starring a very delectable Hugh Jackman and a beautiful Rachel Weisz, the movie has 3 parallel stories spanning a few hundred years. We see a 16th century conquistador in the service of his Queen, saving Spain and her monarchy from losing power. In the 21st century, a scientist is conducting research on monkeys to find a cure for his dying wife’s cancer. Lastly, set in the future, a man is trapped in a biosphere with a living tree, travelling to a nebula where he awaits to be reborn according to a Mayan legend.
At the heart of each story lies a tree. The tree of life that was mentioned in the book of Genesis that grants immortality. In each story, the person is seeking this tree of life in some way or the other to save the love of his life. Love is personified by Rachel Weisz, who turns in an amazing performance as a cancer-stricken woman who has accepted her death. Hugh Jackman makes the 3 characters he plays distinctly different and I think this movie proves his mettle as an actor. I don’t really require much to cry but his performance as a grief-striken husband who seeks to find a cure for death is compelling. I was crying buckets. I haven’t exactly described the story well, but as I write I get this tingly good feeling I get when I really like something.
Direction for movies like this is crucial and the director navigated his way through the plot deftly and there was great use of light and imagery to convey the ideas of enlightenment and life and death.
I only have one gripe. I watched it alone! Kat, I’m sending you a copy of this movie! Man, I miss our long-winded dissections of the Matrix and all things else. Well, we don’t have that kind of time now.
I reccomend watching this movie if you want to watch great acting and have an after-movie conversation. Mind you, it can get heavy. On a date, it can help you sort the dumb from the dumber.
Verdict: 4/5
